D.I.Y. Sweets

We know we probably shouldn’t suggest you do this when you know you can buy the sweet treats from us, but this week, we’re feeling creative. We wanted to know how the old fashioned favourites were really made, and just how they became so popular and we started with the cute little blighters, Sugar Mice.

What you’ll need: (Makes about 8)

450g Granulated sugar
225ml Water
40g Glucose or 2 tbsp golden syrup
String for the tails
Writing icing for decorating the head

How to make them:

1.) Put the sugar and water into a heavy base saucepan, stir over a moderate heat until the sugar melts then add the glucose. Bring to the boil quickly, stirring occasionally until the mixture reaches the soft ball stage at 115 °C. Make sure you don’t beat the fondant mixture in the saucepan as this will make it slightly granular. Allow to cool and stiffen slightly before handling.

2.) Dampen a work surface with warm water, tip the mixture out and leave a bit longer until it’s almost solid. Work the fondant up and down with a spatula or flat bladed knife until it becomes very white and firm in texture.

3.) Animal shaped moulds are ideal for this (but don’t panic if you don’t have any), press the warm fondant into the ungreased moulds and add a small piece of string for the tail. Once they have set, take them out and pipe on the eyes, nose and mouth with icing.

4.) If you do not have any moulds, divide the mixture into equal amounts and wrap the ones you are not handling in cling film so they don’t dry out. To shape the mice, pull off a small amount of fondant and shape the head. Form an oval shape for the body, press the head against the body while the two portions of fondant are soft enough to adhere together. Press the string into the end of the body for the tail and decorate the head. Leave for 24 hours uncovered (if wandering hands won’t get them) to dry then gobble them up!

Causes for celebration!

Causes for celebration!

Looking forward to the year ahead, 2012 is set to be a busy year with many excuses to get together with friends and family to celebrate. (Who needs an excuse I hear you say!?)

Already this year we’ve had a fantastic Burns night, full of haggis, neeps ‘n’ tatties, and of course cranachan – a perfect dessert laiden with whisky, a combination that would get even the most reserved Scotsman or woman up and jigging to the gay gordons!

The most memorable events this year, will no doubt be the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and the Olympics. We are currently busy hatching plans of how we at Seasons are going to celebrate these amazing events with you, our customers. But until we reveal all, here are a few suggestions for party ideas for you all…

For both the Jubilee and Olympics, there will be many outdoor public events, both in London and our local area. Perfect opportunity for a picnic! But rather than traipse around the supermarket, leave the hard work to us – we can put together an extra special picnic to suit any budget, and even look after the drinks for you as well. Just collect from our cafe, and off you go.

If you are having a gathering of friends or family at home to watch the games, to indeed to watch the Queen’s celebration on the television, then you might like to have a BBQ. Seasons can provide everything that you might need, from marinated meats and vegetables for the barbie, or just a gorgeous selection of breads and salads. For the icing on the cake (no pun intended!) then our Seasons Summer Berry Pavlova Tower is sure to wow your guests, decorated with crystalised rose petals and edible glitter.

For those larger out door gathering, why not have a hog or lamb roast? Complimented with our rustic rolls, rosemary and sea salt foccacia, hearty salads (think Waldorf salad with caramelised rosemary walnuts, and potato salad with watercress, sour cream and crisp bacon) and home made relishes, the hog roast is hard to beat.

We are really excited about the year ahead, and are looking forward to being a part of lots of celebrations. To keep up to date with what we are up to, why not follow us on twitter and be sure to be the first to hear what fun we have planned, including any special offers and promotions.

To speak to one of the team about your ideas for the year ahead, call Tanya on 01494 727807, who’d be happy to help. Happy planning!

Snow snow go away, come again another day

With the February weather condemning us Brits to the ever constant bleak midwinter you’d be forgiven for finding yourself humming a little more ‘Here Comes the Sun’ and a little less ‘Frosty the Snowman’. For those of you who missed the artfully crafted snow ‘statue’ conveniently placed in the center of the roundabout outside Seasons, a little extra pick me up is probably just what the urologist ordered (see Wikipedia for less than funny joke).

So onwards and upwards and to Seasons for some hearty winter warmers! If you managed to conquer the snow and paid us a visit this week maybe you were lucky enough to sample our classic Boeuf Bourguignon, served with roasted root vegetables and a little more than a hint of red wine. Excuses mean diddly squat when there’s food this scrumptious to be had! The perfect excuse to leave the cold office.

Despite the snow surprising us once again and rendering British transport completely useless, its hard to deny that Old Amersham in the midst of snowfall paints a prettier than your average postcard. As an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Chilterns, Old Amersham has become a magnet for tourists, sightseers and shoppers and it doesn’t stop there. With several TV and film productions using the town’s historic setting, Old Amersham has become quite the media hotspot. Four Weddings and a Funeral, Midsomer Murders and more recently Sky News have all found the town’s country charm hard to resist. And its not just the town that’s the screen siren, Monday presented the Season’s team with the chance to witness a film being shot in our very own window! So watch out for Seasons Cafe Deli coming to a cinema near you!

Don’t forget! Valentines day is just a week around the corner! Book now to avoid missing out on a table at our Tapas evening on the 16th.

Last minute shopper? We’ve got loads of fantastic gifts perfect for Valentines day. Choose from Prestat chocolates, bottles of champagne, unique hand printed Charlotte Vallance cards and, for that special someone with more mature taste, try our limited edition heart shaped Godminster cheddar. Make this lonely heart a happy couple by combining the Godminster with our Tracklements chilli jam available in an adorable heart shaped glass jar. Cupid couldn’t have planned it better himself.

Liquorice – love it or hate it!

What kind of a sweet shop would we be if we didn’t sell Liquorice? Some might argue and say that the world wouldn’t miss it if it didn’t exist, whereas for others, it’s a flavour that evokes many a childhood memory.

In our shop, we sell over 10 different types of liquorice, and that’s not including the Aniseed flavoured sweets. But day after day, we hear a complete mix of reactions to the stuff – some of them would rather go without any sweets (!) than have a quarter of the sticky black herbal candy, while others will go for Pontefract cakes, liquorice allsorts and comfits (“Oh, and throw in a Catherine Wheel while my wife isn’t looking”).

Rumour has it, the black stuff has been around for over 3000 years, so why and how on earth did someone find out that you could boil the root of a plant ( Glycyrrhiza glabra to be precise) and be left with a sweet solid or syrup ingredient? Interestingly, it is the sweetest natural eating herb making it 50 times sweeter than sugar – but I’m still not putting it in my tea. To start with, the flavour was added to many medicines to disguise the unbearable chemical tastes. It was then added to drinks, used as a mouth freshener, or in China, it’s commonly used as a spice.

Pontefract in Yorkshire was the British birthplace of the sweet form of liquorice, where they discovered that by mixing sugar with the liquorice, you could create a hugely popular confectionary business to line your pockets with profit, and hence we sell the “Pontefract Cakes” as they were rather obviously named.

By far the most popular, and probably the most famous liquorice in the UK these days is Liquorice Allsorts. Those clever PR people at Bassetts have done a great job creating the sweetie character “Bertie Bassett” back in 1929 who apparently “has no plans to retire despite being in his Eighties”! To quote Cadburys “Liquorice Allsorts were discovered by chance in 1899 when a Bassett’s employee Charles Thompson accidentally dropped various kinds of sweets when demonstrating to a wholesaler. The buyer liked the assortment so much that he asked how much it would be to buy the batch in that form.“ So there you go!

In the Netherlands especially, Liquorice is one of the most popular varieties of sweets. They prefer mixing it with table salt which makes one of the most popular varieties called Zoute Drop (Salted liquorice to you and me). Liquorice is loved far and wide across Europe in all sorts of forms.

So if you like liquorice, you have a lot to choose from, from colours and flavours, to texture and sweetness (let alone which of the medicinal benefits you choose to believe). But how many of you are dedicated to it enough to try a raw Liquorice Root? Can you handle walking down the road chewing on what can only be described as a slightly muddy twig? Come and have a go if you think you’re sweet enough!

The Essential Party Ingredient!

When planning your party, celebration or event, you might come to us at Seasons with food in mind. Did you know we are also able to provide the essential party ingredient – the drinks! Earlier this week, we spent the day at the Dorchester hotel, tasting products from both our current, and potential new wine and port suppliers. The things we do for our customers!! We discovered some lovely new wines that we will be adding to our wine list shortly, and we are sure that you will love them just as much as we do. We have an extensive wine/drinks list for you to peruse, and for those looking for a particular bottle, or something extra special, we would be very happy to source these for you. We Shook up Our Wook Up…?

Its nearing the end of Farmhouse Breakfast week and what a success its been! We’ve had an overwhelming response to the limited edition menu with the Bueno Burritos and American style waffles with bacon taking pride of place at the front of the popularity contest. Now we all know that breakfast is important in maintaining a healthy diet, but in my books so is treating yourself once in a while and for those not planning to be good this new year we’ve got some great new products in. Joe and Sephs gourmet popcorn takes its inspiration from the very people  its named after who consider themselves to be chefs and connoisseurs when it comes to popcorn. After you’ve tasted flavours such as caramel and sea salt, a marvelous combination of salty and sweet, and goats cheese and black pepper, I think you’ll tend to agree they know what they’re doing! Or for the perfect Valentines gift for that special movie goer, why not try the seductive combination of caramel, white chocolate and strawberry?

Speaking of which, Valentines day, the hope of all women, the burden of all men is just around the corner. Well we’ve got it sorted. A warm welcome is extended to the return of our Prestat chocolate boxes, with flavours from salted caramel to pink marc de champagne truffles you’d be hard pushed to resist. Or for those men out there that can’t quite stretch to a ring this year, we’ve got another kind of bling with our Prestat Jewel Box. Diamonds might be a girls best friend but chocolate comes a close second.

Fancy something a little more understated? Our bags of delicious bitesize heart-shaped gingerbread biscuits are perfect for that extra edible something on Valentines day. Iced to perfection, each individual biscuit has had the utmost love, care and attention spent on its preparation. “Grown Up” Sweets

The proverbial phrase “like a kid in a sweet shop” can be heard almost daily when families, local workers, school kids, grandparents and all other categories of people walk in to our sweet shop and are greeted by a wall of sweet-filled jars

That said, the prize for quoting it most often almost definitely goes to the adults who come in on their own. Sometimes, it’s the local Mum’s who have just dropped the kiddies at school and fancy a bit of “me time”. Sometimes it’s the office manager who needs to step out and “just get some fresh air”. Or sometimes, it’s those customers who come in every week but only because they’ve been so well behaved that they deserve a reward (we’re talking about the over 30’s here).

Whatever the justification is, these big-kids react in exactly the same way as the kid-kids. They stand in almost total silence, gawping at the glass jars hoping for a flash of inspiration to jump out and help them choose out of the 20 options they’ve “narrowed it down to”. Eventually, when they realise that we’re there waiting for that spark too so that we can pounce on the chosen jar and scoop out the treats, most of them giggle and utter that well-aired phrase again “I’m like that kid in a sweet shop!”.

Some of the customers regain their sense of awareness, realise that (albeit sadly) they can’t really get away with taking sour blue bon bons back to the office without being jeered at, and so they go for the “Grown up” sweets in the corner. To be honest, a lot of them make our top 10 regardless of how old we feel like admitting to be!

For the very sophisticated options, you could go for either Milk or Dark Chocolate covered Brazil Nuts. Surely they’re only half as bad for you if they’re mostly nuts, right?

Some of the weight-conscious new mums go for the Yoghurt covered Raisins – surely the raisin counts as a fruit and they’ll of course (!) be sharing them with the children.

For the ladies who just need that little bit of indulgence after a busy afternoon’s shopping in Old Amersham, White chocolate covered Raspberries are just naughty enough but still with that angelic suggestion that they still contain a bit of fruit – it can’t all be bad for you surely?

For the more experienced palate, some go for Dark Chocolate covered Ginger. A traditional, tangy treat loved by the older generation, who admit proudly that they never used to like it as a child but now that they’re older and wiser….

Failing that, there’s always the foolproof fudge. Creamy and chewy bite sized pieces to satisfy that craving. By the sounds of it lately, more and more children have obviously been sneaking a bite of mummy and daddy’s bag of fudge, and now want their own bag, not for sharing (NB. we do try and steer them away from the Rum & Raisin variety for a bit of morality).

So for some more “grown up” sounding phrases to round up, we can all be “like a kid in a sweet shop” or we can “grow old before our time” and say “bah humbug” to sweets altogether. Acting your shoe size rather than your age is much more fun!
